1. The ampmeter NEVER goes between the starter and battery.
2. The (+) side of the ampmeter goes to battery solenoid/battery.
3. The (-) side of the ampmeter goes to the (BATT.) post on your altenator and some accessories like horn relay and light switch.

since you ARE using the amp meter that you use rubber covers on the bolts that stick out behind the dash.
anything that touches those bolts will cause a BIG spark :confused: .
