For the 1/2 ton guys the 3.55 is what most recommend. Perhaps an entire rear end change would be best for you money wise unless you're pulling a heavy load on the farm. You may want to ask this question in the Driveline Forum..... | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,746 | Hi Tim -- Welcome to our site! I'm going to move this to the driveline forum as I think you'll get a lot of specific help there.
Thanks for stopping by!

Another option would be an overdrive trans like a T-5 and TALL tires. Best of luck. PS, I used a late 60s 3/4 ton 4:11 ratio in my 53 but not sure if it works for your year. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 | There isn't much you can do with a 3/4 ton rear. I think an OD transmission would be a good approach. However, your bolt pattern is going to be different than the 1948 and later which eliminates most OD transmissions that will bolt right in. Clark made a 5 speed OD that fit the old style clutch housings. It was a popular conversion 50 years ago, but the old Clarks are pretty rare these days. Most of them have been scrapped. Years ago, a friend of mine bought a Borg Warner OD from me that was for a Y-Block Ford and he made it fit, but I don't remember what all he had to do. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 1,775 | From what I can tell in the factory service manual, you have a full floating axle. I'm assuming it's the same as the later HO52's. In that case, you'll have the 4.57 gearset and the best you'll be able to come up with is a 4.11 set from the 68-72 trucks. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/4670.htm | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 | 4.11 are getting hard to find, and you don't gain as whole lot. However, if you get faster gears, won't have enough HP to break the wind. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 775 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 775 | I think I have the 4.11 set that I took out.
