For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 20 | Hey all, Been mildly watching out for an old truck and stumbled on this great site. Today I bought a local '52 - 2 ton dump 4600 that's actually in pretty good shape. Will have to do some light restoration. The truck is not original...used to be a fire pump truck for Brentwood, New Hampshire, converted to dump, but the engine sounds great, drives fine, and there's no rust - which is hard to find up here in Maine.
I'll post pics when it's actually in my drive. Have to finalize tomorrow.
Two questions: Two speed axle: what's the proper way to shift and what should I be listening for? Tried it today on the test drive by simply putting clutch in while for example cruising in low 2 - swapping the lever over to high - pulling clutch out and it seemed to shift into the higher ratio fine - bit of a jerk - but... But are there no, no's? and is this the correct way to do it? Haven't had a two speed axle before.
Second: Brakes seems funny. Have to pump it once or twice for it to feel as if it's building up enough pressure to actually give some stopping force. First push is mush to the floor - pump it again and third time there's pressure enough and the truck stops fine. But it doesn't seem right. Is there something tell tale I should look for or replace here? Master Cylinder or Hydrovac?
Thanks and looking forward to a great project...

Since this is the Welcome Centre, and not everyone comes through here when they log on, I'd suggest posting those particular question in the BIG BOLT Forum..... or Driveline forum for the best and complete results.
Its been years (1966) since I drove a 54 GMC ton and half with two speed axle but I think I remember it being a vacuum type two speed where all you did was flip the lever, located under the left dash and then just let up on the gas pedal and then press it back down! ....the guys over in the Big Bolt can set you straight. Good luck and see ya around the garage. | | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 256 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2012 Posts: 256 | Welcome to the Stovebolt :-) 1929 Chevrolet AC International - 4 Door1930 Chevrolet AD Universal - Canopy Express TruckLove the Antique Chevrolet's from 1928-1932 The Beauty, Simplicity, History, and the Stories they Tell[/font] - - In the Stovebolt Gallery-- In the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | Welcome Pinch, sounds like you have a good one. I think if your truck used to be a firetruck, it was likely always stored indoors. As Alvin suggests, check out the Big Bolts section. We can guarantee good response from there.
What are your plans for it? Will it be used for hauling? I hope the details will work out fine for you and soon be in your driveway. Good luck with it.
