I don't know about your 51 but on my 56 the vin is also stamped on the top of the left frame rail over the front axle.

the frame vin stamp did not start until 55.2 on Chevs, although apparently some early GMCs had a number stamped into the outside of the pass side frame rail front horn

spanner, wasn't there a whole thread of folks telling you about your truck from pictures you posted? th only thing the engine number tells you is that engine is a 270

Hy spanners, after checking one of my Motor's manuals I think your truck might be a 1951 400-27, they were built from 1951-54. Possibly tractors did not have a fuel tank filler necks and fuel tanks in the cabs, I'm not sure. Smaller trucks did not use the 270 in those years. This is operating on the assumption that the engine has not been swapped, hope that helps.

400 series '47-'54 trucks came standard equipment with Dayton wheels. The 270 was used in 450, & 470 trucks up until 1951. The 302 was used from '52-'55 1st series, on this body style.

In my opinion, it's a 1951 model. Only year for pull down door handles, & door vent glass. '47-'50 models have a driver side cowl vent. 1952 450, or 470 would have a 302 in it. You just need to figure out if it's a 450, or 470 series.

To determine 450, from 470. Try to find some identification on the rear differential.

As Spanky posted, your friend might be referring to a vacuum two-speed rear selector.

Most likely it has a vacuum wiper motor, too.

It might also have a hydro-vac (vacuum) "brake booster" (depending on the year/size of the truck)?

Does it have a air compressor on it? Are the horns on top air actuated also, or electric? Is it air brakes, air over hydraulic brakes, or hydraulic brakes? Usually a GM truck with Factory air compressor will have an air guage where your headlight switch is & the headlight switch is higher on the dash. Also the air wiper switch would be in the area just below the air guage.

I've seen that air conversion setup in a Chevrolet Silver Book, & GMC Equipment Book. Very interesting. I'd like to see a photo of that air compressor setup.

well then you've copied the wrong thing, you just want the address to link to the pics, not the tag to embed the image on the forum, copy the address from the browser address window rather than the 'easy links' PB provides on the page - you don't want those [IMG] tags, note the difference between your links that don't work and mine that do, I simply extracted the actual address from yours

Hey Bill since the demise of Web shots I too am using photo bucket and cannot seem to get links to work could you fix my links as well?
Sorry spaners didn't mean to high jack your thread but it seems as though we are in the same boat.BTW very cool truck and I am very interested in learning more about how the trailer air brakes interface withe the trucks hydraulic brakes. I would love to be able to pull my air brake tilt top trailer with my 56 6100 dumper.

I would Grant, but the one in your sig line doesn't get anywhere to start from, missing your user name and the server number at the beginning, so just gets a default photobucket entry page grin

on the right of your album or picture page is "Links to share this album" - left click the top one [Email & IM] and it should say "copied", then just right click and select paste in an address bar or a text box here

O.K., It's official. 1951 450 series. So says the "GMC Parts Identification" Tag. Good job. Nice truck ! What are your plans for it ?

Hi All,

I have 3 GMC 450s all have Motor Wheel 6 lug rims with compression washers. This was standard from the Alameda Plant.

There were three factory options from for brakes, Vacuum over Hydraulic, Air/Pack over Hydraulic and straight air brakes.

Also for 52 and 53, besides the 302 CID there was a General Motors Diesel 3-71 option w/Air brakes.

I am also negotiating to buy a '53 450-30 Fuel Tanker and a '52 470-30 tow truck with Holmes Wrecker.

This is a neat looking old truck. This is what I have in mind for my 6100. What is the wheelbase measurement on that truck?

1950 4100 - unrestored and driven weekly for almost no reason at all.

Hey GMCPic, Did you ever get me a picture of that 470, with the Holmes Wrecker on it. Which model Holmes is on it. A 515, 525, W35, or W45 ? Save as many "400" series trucks as you can. They're my favorites.
