Possibly tractors did not have a fuel tank filler necks and fuel tanks in the cabs, I'm not sure. Smaller trucks did not use the 270 in those years. This is operating on the assumption that the engine has not been swapped, hope that helps. | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | 400 series '47-'54 trucks came standard equipment with Dayton wheels. The 270 was used in 450, & 470 trucks up until 1951. The 302 was used from '52-'55 1st series, on this body style. | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | In my opinion, it's a 1951 model. Only year for pull down door handles, & door vent glass. '47-'50 models have a driver side cowl vent. 1952 450, or 470 would have a 302 in it. You just need to figure out if it's a 450, or 470 series. | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | To determine 450, from 470. Most likely it has a vacuum wiper motor, too.
It might also have a hydro-vac (vacuum) "brake booster" (depending on the year/size of the truck)?

Is it air brakes, air over hydraulic brakes, or hydraulic brakes? Usually a GM truck with Factory air compressor will have an air guage where your headlight switch is & the headlight switch is higher on the dash. Also the air wiper switch would be in the area just below the air guage. | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 | it is fitted with a compressor and they are air operated horns that work!! its piped for trailer air brakes (2 line setup) but the trucks on hydraulic brakes ,, ther are two air guages in the dash centre below the radio cut out..and a trailer brake valve on the steering coloumn .

Sorry spaners didn't mean to high jack your thread but it seems as though we are in the same boat.BTW very cool truck and I am very interested in learning more about how the trailer air brakes interface withe the trucks hydraulic brakes. I would love to be able to pull my air brake tilt top trailer with my 56 6100 dumper. | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | I would Grant, but the one in your sig line doesn't get anywhere to start from, missing your user name and the server number at the beginning, so just gets a default photobucket entry page on the right of your album or picture page is "Links to share this album" - left click the top one [Email & IM] and it should say "copied", then just right click and select paste in an address bar or a text box here Bill | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 172 | the links above also lead to other photos ,,

I have 3 GMC 450s all have Motor Wheel 6 lug rims with compression washers. This was standard from the Alameda Plant.
There were three factory options from for brakes, Vacuum over Hydraulic, Air/Pack over Hydraulic and straight air brakes.
Also for 52 and 53, besides the 302 CID there was a General Motors Diesel 3-71 option w/Air brakes.
I am also negotiating to buy a '53 450-30 Fuel Tanker and a '52 470-30 tow truck with Holmes Wrecker.

Which model Holmes is on it. A 515, 525, W35, or W45 ? Save as many "400" series trucks as you can.
