The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Shifter question

I am curious about the little lever on my shifter just below the ball. It's where a PTO would be but I don't have one. I've been told it's a reverse lock out or an overdrive. It's a 1938 Chevy TD 1 1/2 ton.

Reverse lock-out, the early transmissions prior to the introduction of the SM-420 in 1948 have this feature. PTO levers are usually on the floor somewhere, same with overdrive if equipped.

Probably a reverse lock-out. I've seen them on early '40's models,as well. That's where the 2-speed cable attaches,on T.F.,and later trucks. P.T.O. levers,of that era,were usually floor-mounted,due to the linkage used. Cable-actuated units,(dash-mounted), didn't become popular,until the'60's. Try using reverse without using the lever. If it won't engage,then you'll know for sure.
