I'd like to find some smaller main jets for these carbs. I imagine they were jetted for sea level and we live at 2800-3000 ft. in Tucson. Tom thought they could go a little leaner but he didn't have any jets. I have been looking around and haven't found any yet. Anybody with these carbs found a supplier?

Thanks Sharon

you can find some tiny tapered reamers at some machine tool joints that will not leave swirl marks like a drill bit (which can affect the fuel flow thru a jet)...with these and a micrometer you can accurately enlarge the jets a little at a time, and know where you're at (but you cant go smaller) if you go too far you can find some old Pinto or other car that used those carbs and get some more junkyard jets and start over. and on jets that aint marked--you can stick the reamer down the hole and then measure the diameter of that part of the reamer...mine are a five sided shape so it aint a perfect (not high point to high point) measure but I bet you can get within a thousandth anyway-its pretty close.
some folks say they have replugged the oversized jet with solder, redrilled it and then resized the jet with the reamer (if the jets are really hard to find).
AAARRRGGG, you said LEANER--I misread-well thats my two cents anyway! some of it is still true--It would be nice to have a pair of "back-up" jets before you experimented too much.

Sharon,

What exactly is the problem with yours? I have these carbs and live at 2500 ft. My truck runs fine but has been overheating. I may have cured that in other ways but I'm curious about what problem you are having

Well Dogface I just wanted to see if I could get a little better mileage. Currently at 13.5. Tailepipe is black. The mixture screws seem to work. You can run them in and the motor starts to stumble back them out until smooth and a vacuum reading of a steady 18". The truck runs great. Heat soak is a problem when you have to restart after sitting for 10 to 45 minutes in this hot Tucson weather.Possibly float level too high. You guys are great, always with the great answers. "edski" dont worry I may have asked that question Too.

if you are concerned about mileage, you have the wrong vehicle, these usually get perhaps a bit better than 13.5, but their consumption rate and emissions, are right on the verge of being criminal. As far as I know the tailpipes on my truck have always been black, but I have only had it for 30 years, however once I install the same setup as you have (I'm in the process of polishing the intake, I sure wish I had spent the money on one already polished) I'll let you know, I live at sea level basically.

If those are the Carter-Weber (Motorcraft 740) carbs used on the 1300cc Ford engines, Tom Langdon provided me information about 5 years ago on where to obtain different sized jets. I did not want to mess with the very well behave carburetors, so I never obtained the jets.

Maybe someone can confirm that 73405 is the C-W 32 DFT (Motorcraft 7400) jet part number? If it is, different jet sizes are available here.

Not at all sure I get 13mpg...or ever did. Mine over heats but it's not cuz of the carbs. If you go too lean yours may get hot. Been to Tucson many time in summer...I'd need AC but you may be used to it.

If you got the carbs from Tom I'd give him a call re. smaller jets. He sent me the ones I needed on my Holley-Webers.
Good luck

I got 18 MPG at 60mph (about 2200 RPM) with C-Ws on a 1960 261.
I got 12 MPG at 65-70mph (about 2600 RPM).

Higher RPMs and wind-resistance take their tolls.

Tom said he did not have any parts anymore. 13.5 must be a normal mileage. I wont worry anymore. Being a daily driver 10 miles each way gets expensive when you make 6.33 hr.

I think with the heat soak problem, I will lower the float just a little. It floods really bad when you go into a store for a 1/2 hour and try to restart it. Do I introduce myself on the homepage?

Sharon, who gets away with paying 6.33/hr. That is below the Fed Minimum and I generally have little use for the Fed's. But you must make enough to live on and buy old truck parts.

Yeah it's just a part time job with the Red Cross at the air base. I'm retired once already and my husband helps me out too. He works for them also. It' a stipend they pay volunteers.

I'm not sure what these guys telling you where to start is all about but believe me you are welcome to begin anywhere you please. This forum is appropriate for your question line so pay them no attention.
