Any suggestions or warnings before I start? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Yes WARNING: Post with specifics. Where is the leak? and what is "it". If you are talking about the cover leaking, it's drain, remove. scrape, put on new gasket..... If it's axle seal, or pinion seal...more work.

What do y'all think? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 Gas Pumper | | Gas Pumper Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 3,399 | There is always caulk, but I would for sure heed these experts advise and tell us the source of the leak.
If its... A) Leaking from the bottom of the cover, then remove the cover, scrape, get new gasket and clean everything while you are at it.
B) Leaking from the pinion (driveshaft connection) then you need to remove the large nut, replace the seal and if there is pitting on the pinion, add a sleeve.
C) Leaking from the axle (one side or another as evidenced by gear oil on and around the hub, replace axle seals and bearings on both sides just to keep yourself from doing it again soon.
No matter where the leak is, take the opportunity to decide if its time to look at other seals and bearings that could bite you sooner than later. A reputable shop will suggest these things but don't spend more than you should. There are many here who do, but the first thing they are going to say is "get a repair manual" so you know what the procedure is for talking apart whatever you take apart.

Just guessing. Others here will tell you what they think. Is the leaking fluid RED or Oil colored? LOL! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | As mike mentioned the packing nut is completely unscrewed and drifter all the way back. The leak at the ball does not look that bad. Try reattaching the packing nut and watch how much it leaks. Even when everything is replaced they tend to seep some.

First things first....take care of the bell on the enclosed driveshaft, and if you do not have a manual you can go here until you get one. At least you'll know whats involved and know what the garage guy is talking about. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/ | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 126 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 126 | http://imgur.com/ITzWpR9http://imgur.com/PBTYepyhttp://imgur.com/etPQu5rOk so I see the collar now. What about the other leaks? Forgive my ignorance. What is "the ball"? Where would the rear trans seal be located at? I'm reading the shop manual now, thank you very much Achipmunk! | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Some said bell and some said ball. I see it's called the ball assembly. It's bell shaped. Sorry. The transmission has pipe plugs in the side to fill and drain, see manual.

Follow that procedure and the leak will be less than a infrequent drip. Having no drip is rare. If you have enough transmission fluid in the bell/ball assembly (fed from the transmission) you will not be drip free for long. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | When I follow the procedure, I get no leak at the ball. The leak I get is at the rear collar. That collar slides back and forth on the torque-tube cover. Some people use an o-ring instead of the seal provided in the gasket kit. I do not know if the o-ring eliminates drips.

This process took a while for me, mostly because my collar (around the ball) was bent. Check that when you have it all apart, saves a lot of time....
Also, when you have everything back together, make sure you fill the ball with a pint of gear oil per manual.
