Hey all,
My '42 needs some new tires someday, and I was wondering what other people have done with theirs. I am hoping to find an old style looking tire, preferably without the flashy labels on the sidewall, or with an vintage looking style lettering. Any good ideas?

Thanks,
Kelson Mills

Spend a lot of money..... I did some digging last year when I got mine on the road and the cheapest I found was $200 a tire and that was a Chinese made tire. I eventually found an American made tire that was $260 a tire, and it was local. Now $275X6=$1650 just in tires. Now add tubes at $40 each and the mounting....And maybe painting the wheels and your probably going to spend more putting tires on than you did buying the truck.

If they are in usable shape just run them. I ended up pulling the one off that was bad and I have been running the rim only on the inside so I only have one tire on the ground on the left rear. I did find a guy on Craigslist with some used ones and I have two good ones to use. When I do a restore I will purchase new ones I think!

Mark,

Where did you get your tires and what tread do you have...steering or traction? I'm looking for 7.50x20 old fashon squared off snow tires.

Thanks,

I bought these "power kings" for about $200 mounted. RDOMECK was right on when he said the tires, wheels, painting and tubes cost more that the truck. After powder coating, I spend about $2400 bucks. Pix of my wheels and tires are on my photobucket.

DS,

I'm looking for 7.50 x 20 snow tires. I called Miller Tire and they can get 8.25 x 20 Silvertown Snow Tires (7.50 not available) which might be OK on the rear of your bus. I need to find out if they will work on the front of my 56 4400 Napco, they say they are 38" tall...I think they might work.

Against all the experts' advice,I'm holding out for a full set of 8.25R20's,mud-n-snows rear and highway tread front. I've decided since I plan to be on the road a lot with it I might as well make it the best handling and riding set up I can. Best deal so far is Les Schwabb truck shop @ about $2,434.00,mounted and balanced. Other shops around here are talking $2,800.00+,so it looks like Schwabb gets the nod. I'm looking around for someplace to powder coat the wheels while they're apart,I'd like to try that "Chrome" look I've seen mentioned. I have a Harley ('79 FLH w/93" stroker)I'll be selling, and that's part of what the payment will be for.

I don't know about your Les Schwabb stores in Nevada but here where I live Led Schwabb took care of having my wheels powder coated. Nice job and it was cheap, only $27 a wheel if I remember correctly.
If they don't know have them contact the Lakewood Washington store. Les Schwabb dose all there own trucking so they may be able to send then out.

Mills Farm, Not sure where in Wa you live. but I grabbed up a complete set of used tires (in great shape with tubes and liners ) for $100 from Handy Andy rentals in shoreline I think. After talking to the manager he mentioned that they had tons more tires they would like to get rid of. I think the number is 206-367-5050. I picked them up about a year ago, but maybe its worth a try?

I wouldn't go tot he big places. I just got 5 (only needed 5) 8.25 x 20's highway for $875, everything, out the door, mounted and all. It was a little truck stop along side the highway. Asked for a quote. Previously I was looking at $1400. I was thrilled. I'm sure they're import, but they look fine. I think they are samson, but not sure.

Thanks for mentioning that-definitely worth checking out.
These guys seem to be pretty decent-I'll stop in tomorrow and see if they can arrange that. I'm not aware of anyplace local that even does powder coating, but there are a couple of trailer manufacturers here,so there must be someone who can do it.
I'm gettin' kinda antsy to get the tires/wheels done, but I gotta sell the bike first. (I have a bunch of other projects I can button up besides the tires then, too.)
