The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Electrical Bay Bad Headlight switch?

I have a 1/2ton AD PU. I've only owned this truck for a few months, so I don't have much history on it other than it seems to be a nice and complete restoration including a new cloth covered wiring harness (probably purchased from Jim Carter). The headlights/parking lights/tail lights had been working correctly until I pulled the truck back into the garage last night. When I went to turn off the lights the tail lights stayed on. Further investigation showed that the parking lights worked correctly - on at the mid-pull of the switch and off in the full-out and full in postion, but the headlights do not go on and the tail lights stay on.

It was late when I pulled it in last night, so I haven't done much invenstigation other than what I stated above and pulling the wires at the tail lights to save the battery.

Do I have a short in my head light switch? Any other ideas?

Being that I am new to the hobby I would deeply appreciate any suggestions on what I should be checking out.

Check the wires on back of the switch.

Don't forget the dimmer switch. Those things can run you nuts.

Sometimes the contacts inside the switch get a little worn & bent with age. I removed my original switch, bent the tabs on the back and took it apart. I then sanded the contacts a little and bent them in so as to provide a little more contact pressure and it works like new now. The repops are mostly junk so this is a worthwhile task. Run a little sandpaper over the dimmer coil too and she should work good as new. Good Luck

I need a new headlight switch for my 48 1/2 ton. The dimmer post broke off and the masonite back plate is broken also. Are there any after-market switches available that aren't junk?
