Its all original but getting oxidized and has spots where paint is even gone. Not sure if I should use some 1500 wet sand paper to smooth things and then a light buff or what to do. I know that some of the areas on the hood have a light rust forming on the spots so I have to do something with it.

I've not done that so this isn't necessarily a recommendation just an option. I've seen it done over light rust but my experience with paint is it doesn't stick to rust. I've not seen any of these jobs after they've aged some to see how well it holds up. If you want to keep it totally original buff off the oxidation and put a good sealer on it. Keep in mind that every time you polish you remove a bit of paint. BTW congratulations on wanting to go the preservation route. Original cars are becoming pretty scarce.

My Dad passed away at the end of April and he always wanted to maintain it the best we could. It's got 30k on it and was a one owner car. I have waxed it n the past but now it needs something with a bit more abrasive to clean and smooth the finish. I have hand rubbed a few spots with diluted rubbing compound and can get some shine out of the old lacquer
paint. It's the rough spots that I'm unsure of what to do with. I know some material has to be taken off. Just not sure how to keep it at a minimum.

Thanks Don Plain wax polishing does not remove paint, a cleaner will remove paint.
