There's a lightbulb (1 or 2 candlepower) that goes into the dash (I think) that lights up a translucent red dot, which indicates the high beams.
The only 51 that I have access to is currently indisposed in the woods under 3 feet of snow, so I can't verify that, but I'm pretty sure that it was red. | | |

green is better on the eyes and that red should be for your gen/alt indicator lamp

I have now changed to modern gauges and they do not have any provisions for high /low, gen/ alt failures. so i purchased an ''led'' from my local electrical shop and will solder in a resistor, drill a 1/4'' hole in the dash for this purpose.
