The old 8N tractor down at the marina uses a back-up bell alarm warning and was thinking it would be pretty cool on my 1942 1.5 dump truck. Just a 8" bell with a drop hammer inside that would mount to one of the axle shaft flange bolts. Does anyone one the forum use one on their truck? Thanks, Mike.

We used them on our trucks until probably the 70's. I really don't remember when the backup alarms we use today came out. I wish I had kept some of them. It adds a kind of period correct touch to a larger touch.

I have one on my '56 GMC 2-ton. An 8" with the 4 steel balls so it dings every 1/4 turn of the wheel. Loud enough to get peoples attention and looks pretty good.
I find them on eBay now and then, and there are a couple companies that still sell them in 6 and 8 inch sizes. Tri Lite is one, I'll have to dig around to find the other that makes them in chrome.

There's a 6" chrome bell on eBay with the mounting hardware (usually missing on used bells).

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

I have one and have thought about putting on the 860 when it is done. Did that use them on both sides or just one back in the day.

I'd assume just one side.
Do they make them left or right handed, or can they be setup either way? The same one used for reverse when installed on the opposite side will ring going forward.

I remember putting them on in the 60's and they always seemed to be put on the RH side. Never saw on on the LH side so it is likely a right side device.

By the early to mide 70's the electronic type were the most common. It was easy to wire them into the backup lamp wiring and locate them for best sound and protection.

You can only mount them on one side, otherwise she'll be ringing in driving forward all the time.
