Just a 8" bell with a drop hammer inside that would mount to one of the axle shaft flange bolts. Does anyone one the forum use one on their truck? Thanks, Mike. | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 | We used them on our trucks until probably the 70's. I really don't remember when the backup alarms we use today came out. I wish I had kept some of them. It adds a kind of period correct touch to a larger touch. | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | Great...something else I want/need for my truck, you guys need to knock it off. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 719 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 719 | I have one on my '56 GMC 2-ton. An 8" with the 4 steel balls so it dings every 1/4 turn of the wheel. Loud enough to get peoples attention and looks pretty good. I find them on eBay now and then, and there are a couple companies that still sell them in 6 and 8 inch sizes. Tri Lite is one, I'll have to dig around to find the other that makes them in chrome. There's a 6" chrome bell on eBay with the mounting hardware (usually missing on used bells). 1956 GMC 370 dump " 'Tater "1970 VW Volksrod "the Black Bomber" 2007 Chevy Avalanche 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things. But thats just MY opinion! :P

Did that use them on both sides or just one back in the day.

The same one used for reverse when installed on the opposite side will ring going forward.

By the early to mide 70's the electronic type were the most common. It was easy to wire them into the backup lamp wiring and locate them for best sound and protection.
