Over that time period, the drums were switched from smooth to finned. Does anyone know if those later finned drums are the same diameter/depth as the older smooth drums? Were there drum size differences between H052 and H072 axles? If the finned drums are deeper, will they cause tire fitment problems on a '54 if the later brake parts are retrofitted? Am I nuts for even thinking about this? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | Yes, you're nuts. :p I don't the the fin issue will cause any problems. Brake sizes varied some depending on the year and the model, usually the difference was with shoe width. The distance between drum faces is usually 3.5" more on the later rear ends, part of that is the housing and part is the drum. You can slip the newer differential under your truck using newer wheels and narrow tires, but there isn't much clearance between the tire and the fender.
All I can say is get out the measuring stick.

I know the axle tubes are wider on the later H052s...I guess I'm just going to have to find another '67-'72 truck, steal all the brake parts, throw them onto one of my old axles, and see what happens. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | Let us know what you learn.

I have a buddy that works at a Carquest parts store and he got me every part that I needed for it, including the drums. The drums are expensive though, about $140.00 each. A lot of the catalog companies also sell the brake parts but I wasn't sure what I had so I went with the local guy that would return stuff if it was wrong. As far as I know, you can still buy everything that goes inside that drum, including the drum. Thanks. -David | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Originally posted by mugsy: Scott, Can you get me the part # for the drums you got thru CarQuest? Thanks. -David Sorry, I don't have the boxes anymore. I see in my LMC catalog that they offer them for about $20.00 cheaper per drum but I'm sure shipping will make up the difference. I can call the guy Monday if you really want the number. What is the diameter of your drums and the width of your shoes? My set up was 11 5/32" diameter drums and 2 3/4' wide shoes for the drums I bought. What'd you pay per drum if you don't mind my asking? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | About $140.00 each,I see LMC has them for $120.00, Scott | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 734 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 734 | | | |
