This, so far requires a shot of starter fluid in the carb.I'm assuming that the accelerator pump is not working? I haven't pulled the carb apart yet so my question is, does it have a accelerator pump or is there another issue like I just don't know how to start it? It has a throttle knob and a choke knob on the dash is there some technique to start that I don't know about? Any help would be appreciated, best place to source a rebuild kit if needed?

Updrafts are different than regular carbs and are very simple to work on.
If you haven't pulled the carb off the truck before, it's probably full of dirt or crap from years of accumulation. Before diagnosing carb problems your best bet is to rebuild it and start from there.
When reinstalling be sure to put a fuel filter inline to the carb.

While I dislike the word "never"; one should NEVER pump the footfeed on a vehicle with an updraft carburetor! Guess where the fuel goes? The vacuum accelerator pump prevents this, as it will only function after the engine is started, and manifold vacuum has been established.
A vehicle with an updraft carburetor should ALWAYS be started using the choke.
The Carter BB-1 does have a mechanical accelerator pump, so the onus is on the operator NOT to use it.

This gives me some valuable info that I needed. I'll try to start it with the choke only and keep my foot off the pedal. If that doesn't work I'll look into the carb some more. I did not touch the pedal, and just held down the plunger longer and she fires right up! Thank you for the correct technique, as I would be tearing the carb down by now to find nothing wrong.
I didn't think about the whole updraft system, just trying to start her like an old V8? Ooops. | | |
