Can I replace my noisy rear end with a newer unit? I do not expect to find a bolt in, but from a newer 4x4 will give me a 6 stud axle that my old wheels will fit. Or do I just go to 5 stud and change front hubs and all 5 wheels? It would be nice to find something with a locking center section.

In my opinion you should try to find a good 4x4 shop. One that specializes in "rock crawlers" or mud bogging jeeps or just jeeps in general.
I work part time for a driveline shop and almost every week I deliver some drive shafts to a place called Foothills 4x4. These guys can do it all. Rebuild differentials, machine shop work and the list goes on. They even have the forged foundry pieces and can cut an axle to what ever you need.

I found that at times we spend a lot of money, and time, when it would be much more feasible to give the work to a local shop. The price is usually as good or better than ordering stuff and you have someone to look face to face with when doing business or if there is a problem.
Just a thought as to how you may want to approach your situation or at least something to talk about. I've hardly ever heard folks mention these type guys but I think we're missing out on something if we don't check into it! Good luck.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

I think the easiest way to go woulf be to rebuild yours & change to a 3.38 gear set. That has the drop out 3rd member & is easy to pull.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

The 63-82 12 bolt GM truck would be a good swap, if you do end up swapping. 63-69 was the same width and 6 lug, 70 some were slightly wider, 71 and up were all wide and had 5 lugs (2wd). Lot's of aftermarket stuff like posi carriers available, and 3.07, 3.42, and 3.73 gears are commonly found used.

Although, I'd agree that just finding another third member for your Eaton will probably be the easiest route. Just bolt it in your housing and go.

Thanks fellows for the wisdom, I will take a look in our local parts yards. Lots of trucks in Alberta thanks to ranching & oil.
