Looking into buying a electric wiper conversion for a '48 3600. Anything I should consider before buying?

I'd like to retain an original style switch knob, is this possible?

Hey red, I left my original knob right where it belongs, up near the windshield, just not hooked up to anything. The new switch is down low, to the left of the column. Very happy with the conversion, everything went well.

I did the same, left the original in place and tucked the knob that came with the Newport motor under the dash. Works great, I use it once a year when I get the safety inspection done.

research the kits.

some of the vendors sell a kit that interferes with the stock choke cable.

Newport offers two kits. one will clear the stock choke if that important to you

Mine is made by Chassis Engineering but with our stovebolt discount ect...I got mine from JCarter. The number that "misses the choke is 4753CCT....it must have two "C's" in the number to be the one Dads50 mentioned. If you go to Rockports site you will see a listing with only one "c" but its not what you want.

Sept. 2010 the cost was $175 Mine works great. No adjustments had to be made of any kind...am I lucky or what!! I did put my newport knob on top but plan to modify a new maroon knob to be used in place of the black Newport knob.

OOPS-- I just checked Carters site and did not see the Rockport wiper motor listed and the number didn't pull up anything. I also checked Classic Parts real quick and couldn't tell about theirs. I know I have right number, I have the receipt.

DADS50, What did you use to mount your swtich in a remote location and have the original knob operate it? I'd like to get what you have. I have not seen anything like that through Jim Carter or others. Maybe I missed it?

I did not buy anything from the vendors to convert the original type knob. I used the Newport switch under the dash and a repo knob with original bezel.

Its rigged but works. The problem is I used a remote cable and I don't know where it was purchased from, but it fit perfectly.

I think its a flexible drive shaft from a rotary tool.

Anyone want an inexpensive way to get electric delay wipers? I stared off wanting just to simply have electric wipers but it turned to into more.

This project yielded a much better result than I anticipated. Also, this can be done with both the Newport motor AND the "foreign knock-off" that some suppliers sell.

I bought the Newport Engineering wiper motor from Jim Carter Truck Parts that clears the choke cable but I did not like the switch that came with with it. It is hard to turn and seemed to be cheaply made. With that, I spent a lot of time researching wiper switches and came up with a good alternative and it has an added bonus, delay wipers! I am using a 1980-1991 Ford F-series truck (150, 250, 350) wiper switch and delay box. The Ford switch mounts in the 47-53 original location with a 55-59 Chev/GMC truck wiper switch bezel and with some modifications, the original 47-53 knob can be used. To use the Ford switch and delay box, you have to take the cover off the motor transmission, disconnect one wire, and run that one wire out side the motor up to the Ford switch. I did this by drilling a hole slightly bigger than the wire in the wiper motor transmission.

When time allows I'll take photos and put a link here for those interested to see. Below is a parts list.

Electric wiper motor - Newport or "foreign knock-off"
Wiper switch with delay function - 1980-1991 Ford F-Series truck
Delay box from the above vehicle
Wiper switch Bezel - 55-59 GM truck (7/16-28 thread)
Wiper switch Knob - 47-53 drilled for 6-32 set screw
Set screw - 6-32 thread 1/4" long

I feel like this will work for 1954/1955 first also. I bought all three knobs when I started as I did not know the differences and thought one may work easier than another for this project. Turns out all three knobs can be slightly modified to fit the Ford delay and non-delay switch. Hope this helps someone.

That switch should work fine on a 54/55 - the only problem on some 54/55 Chevrolet truck would be with the after-market wiper-motor, not your switch set-up. All non-GM electric wipers interfere with the speaker on the original 54/55 radio - no radio, no problem with the after-market 54/55 wiper motors.

HI Red, would you have a part number and supplier for the remote wiper shaft? Would like to do my 53 3100 this way.

I was able to buy the 12 volt wiper motor like they use to make the electric conversions from Surplus Center for 29.00 each. I bought the longer shaft, because I don't know yet how long I'll need and it can be shortened. I figure I can make the mounting bracket for the motor, by the pictures posted on the websites for them..... Bought the switch from Speedway Motors like what they show with them. Just need to adapt my know to fit the switch. Like the idea for delay wipers.

Mike, What kind of switch are you using? I did not use the cable or buy one so I can't help there. Look at my photos in the link below. I used a 1980-1991 Ford truck Wiper switch mounted in the original location. I feel like this is better than a cable or the switch they supply with the Newport wiper motor.
