You may consider a free to cheap 216, a later model 235, better yet a 261, or any number of engines further and further from stock.
| | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 | You can also get a 292...one of the larger inline 6's. I think you can still find them sometimes in salvage yards, as they were used until the 70's. Cost is going to entirely depend on what you find.
If you have to rebuild it, then it will probably cost a bit more than your typical V8. But I'll bet you can get it rebuilt for 3 to 4 grand, depending on your machinist.
You can rebuild a small block V8 for less, so your cheapest option might be to convert it to a V8. But that's a personal choice. You can rebuild a V8 for less than 2 grand if it's just a stock rebuild.

I would suggest nothing short of at least a 235 but there are others out there. When you decide what you want check and see what a Remanufactured engine would cost from some of the Vendors like NAPA, even Auto Zone and Advance. You may be surprised and if you can get a discount it would be a good option.
....now, down in Johnson S.C. there ia place that actually does the remanufactured engines that NAPA and some others sell. Just recently my nephew went to rebuild an engine but after "running the numbers" it was several hundred dollars cheaper to let the folks down there rebuild....YOUR OWN ENGINE if thats what you want. Therefore, if you could find a decent rebuildable 235, 261, or V8's for cheap, then have it rebuilt. There are ways to save some money and still come out with a nice engine.
