In most cases it pops up..... a little kroil or other penetrating oil on the shaft will help. ...if the 54 has the holes to use a "puller" then go get a loaner tool from Autozone or Advance. You get the deposit back when you return it. Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Alvin's knees and hammer-jolt technique often works. Just make sure that you put your knee-pressure near the center. You might crack the wheel if you put too much pressure towards the outside. I usually use this type of puller. As Alvin posted, it can be borrowed from many parts stores. There are threaded holes in the top center of the steering wheel. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | real easy to make a steering wheel pullerBill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 | I installed a reproduction center horn button on my '54. Now, I can't get it out to remove my steering wheel. Any suggestions on removing the button - other than destroying it while prying out? (They don't cost much, so that's probably what I'll do.)

Any suggestions? I've used the knees under the wheel trick many times. These days I use a universal puller with "J" bolts from the hardware store instead of the threaded bolts that come with the puller. I hook the "J" bolts under the spokes of the wheel, put a bit of tension on the wheel then give the center bolt of the puller a moderate tap with a hammer and it pops right off. This is the type of puller I use.
