Acquired a 4 spd from a 51 2 ton dump to replace the one in my 52 1/2 ton.
1st question is, are the gears the same?
2nd question. I heard that all I have to do to match it to my torque tube is to change the rear bearing retainer. Is this true?
Thanks for any help.

Gears are the same just change the parts on the back of the tranny for your torque tube.

Also change the speedometer drive gear. I think they will just swap, This will keep your speedometer/odometer true.

The drive grear is mounted "on" the transmission output shaft (actually, I dimly recall that it is mounted on the u-joint yoke on an SM420 The driven gear is screwed into the transmission body, and the speedometer cable attaches to it.

I think that some drive gears and driven gears can be mixed-and-matched, but they came as matched pairs. I have purchased speedometer adapters from the The Speedometer Shop to get almost perfect mph readouts on two trucks. Also, Bruce Bugay sold me a NOS one set of NOS speedometer gears.
