I am rebuilding a '49 6400, but am using an '05 E-450 frame. I can't use the original gas tank due to the drive shaft tweaking, so I bought an old gas tank (long 25 Gallon) that will fit... But... after I got it out of the old truck bed it was on, I found out it was Diesel. I am using a '72 Olds Rocket 350, so I need regular gas. Is there anything special I need to do to the tank other than drain it, dry it and then use regular gas? I have seen some mentions that I need to check D.O.T. regulations because using a diesel tank for regular gas is like driving around in a big molotov cocktail... If so, why? Also, I looked everywhere on the MO websites but can find nothing even mentioning using converted tanks. Any suggestions? Thanks

I don't see anything wrong with your plan. The school buses I work on have heavy duty diesel tanks, much stronger then a regular gasoline tank. Diesels use on one outlet and one return inlet, but most tanks have room for more taps if needed. I have never read anything in the Missouri inspection manual about fuels and tanks.
Thanks for the answers, I did some more research and can't find anything wrong with it. The molotov cocktail thing had something to do with diesel tanks having more pressure or something. Could't find the string on it again. Another place said they did it and it works fine, just clean it out real good. He took his to a radiator place for a thorough cleaning, and that sounds like a good ideq.

All you need to do is drain it and install it, plug the extra fittings and be sure you still have a vent/rollover safety valve on the tank. No need to wash it unless it looks nasty inside, probably just fine. A little Diesel residue or even a few cups full won't hurt anything with a full tank of gas to go with it.
