I did everything on this truck myself with very few exceptions- machine work, the seat, speedo head, wiper motor, and maybe a couple things I can't think of right now. I had very limited painting experience and no body experience beyond changing panels. The paint and body work was the most challenging part for me. The most accurate statement I can make about this whole project is it just would not have happened without this forum. I relied heavily on the information so many people have supplied helping the rest of us. Thank you so much to everyone who contributes here. The search function receives a lot of criticism but I have found it very useful and got most of my information that way. If you can do that kind of quality work in only 3 years, then my hat's off to you. Did you watch any instructional videos to learn bodywork and paint? Like you, that will be a new challenge for me.

Great job and pictures! | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 | Lugnutz, I got the little book Metal Bumping that is often recommended on this site. I do watch car shows but no specialized instructional videos. You can get all the info you need on paint and bodywork right on this site if you search some.
Several people list detailed instruction on how to achieve good results. What I hard to learn (over and over) is not to skip any step and they are ALL important. I figure I painted the truck about 2 1/2 times counting all the times I had to redo parts. The smallest things like masking with minimal creases and crevices or closing the door gently when leaving the painting area can make a lot of difference in the amount of "dirt" you get in your paint. I did not have a dedicated paint booth.

I too am doing the work myself, but longer than 3 years. I am just about finished with the patch panel installation and hope to be prepping and painting this summer. The only work I haven't done so far is the wiper motor rebuild and I had some custom wheels made up so that I went from locking ring, to one piece. (mine is a two ton). I wished I found this site before I even bought the truck, but it has been a storehouse of information and ideas and my favourtie place to go on the net.
