Well I spent part of yesterday working on the brakes. It was a lot of working, but I'm pleased with the results. Here are some before and after pics.

I only got the one set done. Lots of cleanup and prep work, but worth it to make it look better.

I also found that Cascade Friction, where I had my shoes relined and got the new wheel cylinders, has a rebuilt hydrovac for $256. That's a great deal I think.

I should finally have the engine started this coming Saturday too. So things are moving along.

Thanks 3B. I sure do have a greater respect for these big trucks. I'm so used to working on my Hondas and van. This takes brake work to a new level.

I hope your practiced at it I might need advise on my 53 i guess it air over hydraulic.

So, one of my friends looked at my brake job and informed me I needed to grease all the metal to metal contacts points. Makes sense. Can I just use the antisieze I use on smaller disc brake pads?

there's a brake parts lube that'd be safest, Permatex makes one

For what it's worth, that price on the rebuilt hydrovac is right in line with what I paid for mine. Luckily my core was good, the core charge was almost as much as the hydrovac.

Beautiful job on the brakes! When would you like to start on mine? And please do follow up with a driving/stopping report. From what I've been told over the years, those monsters may not be state of the art, but do a great job of hauling down a big bolt.

Also...have you replace the single pot master cylinder? If so, I sure would like to hear/see more about it.

Thanks Tango. I just picked up the Hydrovac this morning from cascade Friction in Tacoma. Great guys there. They can get me a brand new master cylinder for $101, it's a Raybestos part MC21680. So I'll get that ordered pretty soon. They did not show a listing for the from wheel cylinders, so will be looking more for that. Jim Carter has them for $62 each, but want to check around some more. I think there are guyst that have posted some resources for parts so will be searching the threads.

If you are looking at $62 each for cylinders you might want to look into getting yours sleeved with stainless liners. Cost might be a little more than that...but then you won't have to worry about rust again. Just something to consider.

I noticed you had a new spring for the brake return spring looked like what is the part number for that? I am warking on a 53 gmc 353-24 and one bent on me putting it back together. Thanks in advance and great job there looks like

Randy0563, the springs aren't new. I just sandblasted all the rust away and repainted them. Sorry.

O ok i will continue my search than
