The assembly manual calls out what. Screw. Nut bolt washer,etc to use in the building of the 54 1st series trucks. Question for the masses- is there a key somewhere for the callouts listed?

...I'm pretty much in the bolt with you! About all I know is that "LW" means "lock washer".

...maybe, IF you look up the part number in the master parts book the part number would probably say what it is??? I don't have a master parts book but if you look around there is some listed on line.
....or you have to do what I do when I don't remember. Use what fits or works better at the time!

It's really frustrating to have the diagram and the part number, but no way to know what size the nut or bolt is.

Probably the best reference is the knowledge and experience of other Stovebolt.com forum members. Post a question about the specific bolt.

I haven't found a reference that defines the bolt numbers in the Assembly Manual. A few of the nuts, bolts, and washers can be referenced in the "Standard Parts 8.900" group of the Master Parts Catelog with illustrations, but most of the hardware items in the MPC do not have the same number as in the Assembly Manual. The hardware item and dimentions are sometimes shown in the MPC section for the item that it attaches to, such as this listing for Group #0.002.

If you do find the nut or bolt in the MPC, this list of abbreviations may help.

The drawing in the Assembly Manual will sometimes show you if the bolt is a hex, square, clutch head, etc.

You can sometimes find info on the item by doing a Google search of the part number and a brief description such as "bolt 3701135" for the outer bolts in the front engine mount of my '54 3100. Or, "washer 352282" for the middle washer on my '54 front engine mount.

Try the site to search for other part numbers.

I've found that some of the "bolt kits" or specific bolts sold by vendors are not correct, so don't assume that they know any more than you do.

Bottom line - I don't have a good answer.

Why don't we start a master list of fasteners? Look in the assembly manual, look at what is on your truck in that position, confirm the fastener type, length, thread ect.

Just doesn't seem like it would take that long to come up with a list cross-referenced to the assembly manual numbers.

I reccomend Larry's parts list all the time. Actually, i think it should be permanently
added to the "Tech Tips" page.

I have see that in some cases different assembly plants might use different parts for some reason. Therefore the term "original" might be different for different vehicles built in different plants.
For that reason I agree with Alvin, "use what fits"

Larry's list is a good start. His list includes this disclaimer regarding the correctness of the parts:
"* These are not the "concours correct" fasteners. They are just what is currently mounted on BillyBob."

It took me only a few minutes to copy his info onto an Excel worksheet that can be easily sorted by part number, location, etc. I'll contact him to ask for his permission to distribute it. With a few tweaks, it could be updated as more info comes in from the forum.

I sent an email to Larry Kephart asking permission to use his data in an Excel workbook for us to use and update. He immediately responded with a thumbs up.

Do I have to have an Excel program installed on my pc to look at it?

Some of the IT gurus on the forum can answer better than I can.

Probably need Excel or a clone Excel program. I could save as a .pdf, but it would not be as flexible for finding parts.

Why not build or export it in Google Docs and open it up to everyone? You could maintain control of input but open it to the public.

Google Docs Spreadsheet might work if the Excel spreadsheet has no macros and does to do sophisticated list/table manipulations.

That looks like the solution. I exported the workbook to Google Docs. Now I gotta play with it to make it easy to use inside Google Docs. Probably won't get to post the first version until Sunday.

To view the Excel files, download and install the free Open Office or Libre Office suite. Drop in replacement for Microsoft Office, and will load and read Excel files.

I finished the trial run of the spreadsheet with part numbers used in the Factory Assembly Manual based on the data that Larry Kephart and BillyBob started. I'm wide open for suggestions to make it easy to use.

Looking for input on the "correct" way to list the dimentions of the nuts, bolts, washers, etc.

I feel that the information must include the dimentions/descriptions of the original part, plus info on substitute parts that will work. I have space for both on the worksheet.

I used to think that I was the cat's meow when it came to creating Excel spreadsheets. But I'm having a little trouble with the Google version. And when it comes to publishing for all to see and update - I'm befuddled.

So, I guess this project moved me from wizzkid to dufus in one weekend! But it's a start.

Does the Google program allow you to add an image to anything?

I know this Tech Tip took a while to build and get pictures, but for some folks, it is very helpful.

I do not have much experience with Google Spreadsheet.

You (the owner) can add collaborators (by email address) but then that collaborator can change anything (until you take away a person's collaboration ability).

Sharing collaboration on a Google Spreadsheet (all viewers and Editor). Only the owner can add/remove an editor.

This look great and it crosses to MS Excel with ease when you down load. Lot of work went into this and I hope everyone will appreciate the amount of effort that was required.

A friend and I have been working on getting the similar doc for the 41 to 46 trucks.
