GMC or other? Are you asking whether other makes of vehicles used the same single speed axle setup as Chevy and GMC? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Wondering if the R&P from a GMC or any other makes/models will fit the Chevy...or possibly other years as well. Basically looking for any alternative source for a gearset other than the '42-'46 Chevrolet 1.5 T that will work without mods. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Than I may be of help!
I believe that only GMC and Chevrolet used this particular axle. You can search vehicles from 1941 through at least 1953, probably a bit later. There are differences in the side gears, including some with rounded thrust washers and such, but the ring and pinion gears are the same and will fit so long as it is the standard single speed axle.
GMC also used 1/2 a dozen other makes of axles such as Timken and alike, but they use completely different parts.
When I rebuilt the rear on my COE I used parts from a 1941, 1946 and 1953 to complete one rear axle. I believe I saw this same rear end in a junk yard on a 1961-ish 1 1/2 ton, but I did not tear into the rear end.
Do you currently have a 5.43 or 6.17? There's a post somewhere on this site that lists possible donor models for the 5.43.
Hope that helps a little.

I have the 5.43 and doable donors are exactly what I'm trying to nail down. Did a quick search earlier but will try again using just "5.43" and see what comes up. Will post whatever I find for anyone else "on the hunt". | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Is there a problem with the ring and pinion you have?
School busses have been said to use them more often than not. But you you have a school bus, so... | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | To any concerned...Did find a previous post that states the following...
"Part No. 604416 1941-52 1 1/2 ton 7 + 38 teeth. out of a 1952 chevy parts book"
Will do some follow up, but thanks to Jeff for the lead. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 127 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 127 | If you have a 5.43 ring and pinion setup I will trade you a 6.17 setup if thats what you're after. I've been looking for a 5.43 for 2 years, they are not easy to find. PM me if you're interested. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 667 | Hotrod --- It's another 5.43 I'm looking for. And opening the search from '41 to '52 should help a bit. Good luck with the hunt. | | |
