I know that several vehicle columns will work. I am installing power steering. I would like to go to a junkyard to obtain the column. WHAT CAN I USE?

Im looking for one that is made for floor shift vehicles (non column shift), would like one with no key on the column as I have the ignition switch mounted on the dash (though I can always change that). Im hopeing to find a column that will use the stock column mount, which means the column tube diameter would need to be 2", but will make/get a mount if needed. Im keeping my eye out for a late 60's to 81 gm van, 67-72 gm pickup and a few others. I was told the best, cheapest, somewhat easiest route is to use a column shift tilt column out of a late 60's to 81 gm van and shave the shifter off, which you can do to basically any column if needed. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 | A lot of guys are using '70's to early '80's Chevy/Gmc Van columns. They fit nice because they are shorter than the Caprice, Malibu, Camaro, Nova etc columns. I used a '79 Caprice tilt column in my '54 Chevy panel. I shortened the column 7" because I used a '73 Nova front subframe which has a rear steering box. I shaved off the column mounted shifter because I have a floor shift. In my '49 Chevy pick up I used a '80 Camaro coulmn from a floor shift car, because I got a '79 Camaro front subframe in it which has the front steering box. If you want a junk yard column with no igntion switch built in, you got to go pre '67 GM. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 | Oh - I forgot to say - you got to make up your own steering column mount, because the stock truck mount is too narrow a diameter to fit the late GM tilt columns as mentioned in my previous post. A lot of aftermarket companies make column mount if you just want to buy one already made. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | The van one will work the best. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 230 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 230 | 1970 gto/lemans work's pretty good of course i have a 1960 impala dash in mine . | | | | | Joined: Dec 2009 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2009 Posts: 20 | I want to put a tilt wheel in my 1952 gMC. How hard was rewiring the original wires to the column? If I geta column from a late 70's gm van will I have to cut the length? Sweet 1952 you have! Took me forever to figure out what column I had. Some wiring kits have adapters that will match right up. Good luck. | | |
