I've recently rebuilt a 235 distributor. I thought I would give is a simple test with my continuity testor. With the cap on, should I be able to put one lead where the coil plugs in (center) and another lead in any of the plugs and get a complete circuit at points when I turn the shaft?
I'm curious if the roter actually touches the contacts in the cap, or does it just arc because its so close?

I used a 250 inline 6 distributor and a battery. I chucked the distributor shaft in my drill press with the cap facing down. Using the slowest speed and a rubber stopper (to keep housing from turning) I was able to check the meters at a set rpm. I had four meters hooked up at once so it was easy to see which ones didn't read right!
Four a quick test, it worked really good with no problems.

cm If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.1965 Chevy C10 | | |
