Does anyone have experience with installing a floor shifter for a 3-speed torque tube transmission? Specifically, I'm looking at the Mr. Gasket 7667A. I've read some about it, but everything I've found has been about transmissions with open drive shaft. Mr. Gasket's web site shows the 7667A as fitting the '51, but I just want to be certain that it won't take a ton of fabrication/modification.

Thanks for the help!

I used the the same Mr Gasket floor shift conversion kit in my '55.1. It will fit your truck. The kit has all the instructions needed for installation.

What do you think of the quality of the Mr Gasket shifter? I've read differing reviews about it online.

The 55 1st series has open drive shaft, doesn't it? I was wondering about how the installation was on a torque tube transmission.

Tim,
I don't think the driveshaft is going to cause you any difficulty in installing the shifter. You're more likely to be distressed by the work necessary to connect the shift arms, and by the position of the shift lever inside the cab. Before buyiing the 7667, I'd suggest you read the installation instructions carefully, so you understand the necessary mods to the shifter arms.

I'd also suggest you pull the trans cover out of your truck an take a look at the trans. The instructions show where the stick mounts on the trans. Look at where that is on your 55.1. Will you be happy with it that close to the seat? If not, then you can plan for additional work to mod the shifter and stick.
I don't mean to scare you off this plan. I just want to ensure you have the opportunity to avoid unhappy surprises.

regards,
Leon

Well, Leon, I am rethinking the Mr Gasket shifter. I've started seriously considering finding a factory 4-speed to install. I like the benefits of the granny low for parades. I also like the idea of 2-4 ("normal driving" gears) being synchronized. I'm afraid that it may be harder to find the transmission and everything needed to install it than the Mr Gasket item, but I think I will be happier with the results.

I would recommend you drive a vehicle with a SM420 in it before you change anything. 1st gear will probably be too slow for most parades and reverse is just as slow.
