We live in Idaho and in 2009, my wife wanted to take a break from the cold so we spent that winter in Arizona. While there, I started looking for a truck.

I had already done a restoration on a 1954 Chevy Bel Air 2-door hard top that I bought in 1995. I had taken that one down to bare metal and had it primered. The engine and transmission were re-built. Put in all new glass and new fuel tank. Put in a new interior.

When I was done with the car, I told my wife that I would like to get an old truck to tinker with.

Well, I missed out on a few trucks when in Arizona. When we got back home, I found myself still looking! A friend kept finding and buying trucks for himself and he offered to find me a truck.

In October 2010, I found a 1954 truck in southern Idaho which was listed on our local Craigslist. There was no phone number so I had to email the seller. I emailed several times but got no response. The ad was almost due to expire (45 days) when I finally got an email from the owner. It seemed he had a different email account he didn't check very often. I may have been the only one to see this truck being for sale.

When I went to see the truck, it was parked in their driveway with the sweet grille looking right at ya when you drove up! Man! The hood was off the truck and the engine had been set in there but he never got it started. I checked the truck out and it was all together and rust free (which is important with these old trucks). The brake pedal went all the way to the floor!

Turns out the truck was not a 1954 but a 1955 1st Series. It had the open drive line. The title and script on the door confirmed the year. The owner didn't know this and may have figured the year based on the grille (which is the same for both year trucks).

The owners (especially the wife) really didn't want to part with the truck but they had to. So, I bought the truck and had it towed home. I told them I'd bring it back once I got it done (hopefully).

First thing I did was to pull the wheels off and sell them. I bought a set of rally wheels.

Next I did a complete brake job - master cylinder, new lines, etc. So the brakes were solid.

Then I concentrated on getting it running. It had a 235 that didn't run. I pulled it out. A friend had a 261 that came out of a 1962 2-ton truck. Had it re-built. Got a T-5 transmission 5-speed from an 1985 S-10. Put on dual exhausts and dual carb (from Tom Langdon - Stovebolt Engine Company) with hot water intake. Added Fenton headers.

I converted the electrical to 12 volt and re-wired the truck bumper to bumper. I put a tach in it. It was an accessory in the 1954 and 55 trucks. I took out the clock and replaced it with the tach. With the 261 engine, I enjoy watching the tack go up. When I shift gears, the truck has a good jump!

Having that open driveline made these jobs easier.

I re-did the wood in the box with yellow Pine. I bought a kit from Mar-K. That was a fun project. I got the wood and put six coats of poly on it. It took me two weeks to do all that. Mar-K has great instructions for re-doing the bed so that helped a lot. The project went smoothly and I took my time. (Since I'm retired, I have a time now!)

Re-did the interior, new seat covers and put in new insulation. I put a new back bumper on it and all new door handles, windows, side windows, vent windows. I had the gauges re-conditioned by a fellow in Portland, Oregon and he did a great job at a good price.

I am probably the third or fourth owner. After I bought it, the seller said it was hard to let the truck go. He and his wife had done some "serious spooning" in that truck! He even called a few days after I hauled the truck home to say if we changed our minds, he'd take it back.

It's certainly not a show truck because it's just primer (the previous owner had done that). Friends have asked about painting it and most say "don't do it!" It was originally the Chevy green.

I just wanted a driver and this is really a fun truck. I love the sound of the inline 6 with dual exhaust. When the weather is nice, this is our ride of choice. We don't take this truck out in the winter. This time of year, I take it out a few times a week. I feel like a teenage again.

I found that working on the trucks (compared to the Bel Air) was a challenge but there is something easier about it ... no fancy interior. I guess it's because back in the 50's, trucks were made for working.
