My problem is that my dad says because the fuel tank is directly behind the drivers seat it is too dangerous. Is there any way I can install a fuel cell or additional fuel tank in the bed of the truck and how much would this cost? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | Welcome to the Stovebolt  You can install a tank either inside the frame rail(check donor trucks at wrecking yards) or at the rear of the frame between the rails. Look at the links and tech tips section at the top of the page here as well as other areas with more information than a person can handle in years

They're more prone to getting hit there than in the cab. Just as long as all of the lines are fresh and there are no fumes in the cab. But, on my '64, I'm relocating my tank to gain legroom and stereo component room.

I don`t suppose your dad would let you drive a frod Crown Victoria (yes the one the police use for cruisers and patrol cars) if hit wron in the rear, those are notorious for catching fire. If it is really bad where the doors won`t open and your ride is on fire. Oh,,, how many times did the truck you are looking at get burned or blown up in its lifetime?

| | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 | I ride my bike all the time with 4 gallons of gas right between my legs right above a big heat source of an engine with carbs that tend to leak, and I haven't caught fire yet.
It may be marginally safer for you as a driver to have the tank between the frame rails but if you get hit hard enough burning is the least of your problems.
These trucks had the tanks in the cab for years and I have not heard any rumors of them being death traps.

I know I fixed my 77 Cheyenne tanks 3 times (4 years), but never have had to touch my 68 C-10 tank (6 years).
