It has no stampings. I believe it is GM. It's in a 1949 Chevy.

Hy hasson, it might be a 3/4 - 1 ton rear diff., used from the forties to the sixties. I can't see all the mounting holes in the pic. but the diff. I'm thinking of has ten mounting holes.

It looks like the standard 1 1/2 - 2 ton rear end used in a ton of years of both Chevy and GMC trucks. It doesn't have a specific name for that axle type.

What size truck did it come out of?

I found a 5.14 out of the same year GMC. Does anyone know if it will fit?

If it came out of the same type of carrier, it should fit. There were a few slightly different axle housings that shared most of the same parts for the carrier itself. Some had different axle shafts and side gears but most of the time the carrier and ring and pinion gears were the same with the exception of Timken and other brand rear ends plus 2 speeds.

BE SURE to measure the backlash of the ring and pinion gears before tearing it apart. If the tolerances are reset back to stock those gears will whine and wear fast.

As I posted above, before realizing the actual ratio, if the carrier is the same, it should fit. Unfortunately the 5.14 is from a 1 ton truck and will not fit. The carriers look identical, but the 1 ton is much smaller. They did not make a 5.14 for 1 1/2 ton rear ends.

The main pic is on its side- right? So that the crown wheel overload screw is facing up.
It looks identical to the one in my '47 1.5 ton (4100, more or less).
mine is MASSIVE, 12 inch crown wheel, 5.54 ratio, on an axle with 11000 lb springs and dual 7.00-20 wheels.
From what I know, (not much) all the big bolts from the early 40s to the mid 50s had the same unit with varying ratios, 5.54 and 6.11 were common.

No stampings, vague casting numbers between the top ribs.
