I don't know your welding skills or equipment set up enough to anwser "yes or no", so...
Have you got an old working motor to test your idea on? if not, do you have enough money to buy a new one?
If you answer "yes" to either one of these questions, then I think you are good to go.

I have a MIG, so I was just thinking to drill small holes in the tabs (L-shaped) so I can just basically touch a spot weld through each hole. Maybe 3 holes per tab and wait between each to keep the heat down. What you're saying sounds reasonable. I don't know how big the tabs are, but I would try to get by with the fewest number of plug welds as possible. I would start with just one. There can't be much stress placed on the bracket. Be sure to clean the spot on the motor casing down to bright metal before you weld.
