How easy is it going to be for me to swap out the 283 in my 64 Chevy Stepside for a 350? Also, any tips on a ground up restoration, which I am comletely new to, on this truck? :confused:

It should be a direct bolt-in, provided the 350 is of the pre-fuel injected era. As for the restoration tips, just clean, prep and paint everything properly and replace or rebuild anything worn or broken. Don't want to finish your truck and go back into it later to do a repair. Just my input,

Trading a 283 for a 350 is like trading Cheryl Tiegs for a Britney Spears poster: no class man, no class at all. Think very carefully before making that kind of move. Trading for a 327 would make since, but a dime a dozen universal motor like a 350 --- NEVER!!!

Cheryl Tiegs must be old enough to be Britney's grandmother... Cheryl would be past 55, and Britney must be about 20. Certaily possible from a biological standpoint. If 1964BowtieCrazyStepside is much younger than his truck he may not even know who Cheryl Tiegs is (was?).

Real class in a '64 would be a 409. She's so fine my 409!

Go with a 350. Parts are easier to find, cheaper and it will give you better performance. Don't listen to BR, I think he is actually a **** man.

I think Britney Spears is pretty hot myself but i did pull a 283 out of my '63 and replaced it for a 350. :p
I should at least get some cool points from you old guys for keeping the 3 on the tree.

Cheryl Tiegs is a M.I.L.F. for sure. The only problem is that she is old enough to be my mom.lol

So i guess what im saying is that Cheryl or a old 283 is ok but i would rather have Britney or a nice 300 hp 4 bolt main 350 anyday.

Hey Syclone --- any cool points you might get for the column shift are sacrificed by the use of a 350. A hopped up inline, a 283, a 327, a 348 or 409, or even a 427 gets lots of cool points, but a run of the mill dime a dozen 350 costs ya cool points because, while it is true that they are very dependable and economical to work on, they are just way to COMMON to be cool.

There's no replacement for displacement, go with a 454 or a 502ci. They will be a direct bolt up but will require a bunch of small mod's to make it right.

Yep, 350 would be a direct swap, mounts, brackets and all. IF you're doing a full-on restoration, keeping the 283 would be a smarter decision.

I've actually thought it might be kind of neat to get ahold of an old 283 to play with. Wouldn't mind playing with Britney, either...
