What do most people do with the rod in the hinge to keep it from rusting and bleeding all over the side of the hood? My first thought was to have it chrome plated. Any thoughts here.

They have sticks of material used to regalvanize areas where welds or cuts have been done on galvanized metal. That hinge pin is so small you may be able to get by without even having them galvanized. You need heat to apply the material, but I'm unsure as to of how much is actually needed.
Good question, I've never actually thought of this area before.

Most hardware stores have SS. My '37 GMC takes .25", am considering using nylon or teflon, very little shear here, main problem is rust that cannot be removed and properly protected except w/ bore cleaning brush.
'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

I have yet to see any sign of rust from the hood hinges. A small amount of oil goes a long way to keep them rust free.
