on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 199 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 199 | Has anyone run modern truck rims on their 1 ton? My son found a set of late model HD rims. Polished aluminum. Complete with caps tires and all. Offset is too deep for my truck and the 16" rubs on the steering arm end. I'm not looking to make it a full stocker so I'm not ready to shell out $800 or more for tires and tubes and possibly replace one of the stock 17" rims.
The truck will be more for cruising around and probably not see a full load other than maybe picking up a small block once in a great while.
Are there other options?

We went to the junk yard and picked up a set of Dually truck front hubs (AD body style). Take off the original hubs and put on the dually hubs and you're good to go. They even use the same bearings.
That led to another problem though. . .the offset was wrong for the rear-end now! We opted to get a new rearend out of a Dodge van that was wider than the stock axle. That spaced the rear wheels out to match the fronts.
One other problem, but not a huge one is that this will increase the "scrub" of the tires because the centerline of the tire is now outboard of the kingpin. Like I said, not a big deal if you're just using the truck for cruising.
Good luck!

I'm going to have to get something to move the rear's out a little anyway due to the minimal clearance to the backing plate. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 224 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 224 | I run modern (read: new) rims and tires on mine, but I shelled out $1200. That's with singles. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

As far as the rear axle, I picked up a dually conversion kit (made for single wheel trucks) and used the spacer from that kit on my '50 to get my wheels out where I wanted them. They are a bolt on spacer that is about 6". You can find something similar in JC Whitney.

I have a 1 1/2 ton with duals already. I also have a dually 1 ton 1992 truck.
I just want the front to clear the steering with the modern HD 16" polished aluminum rims.
It may not be meant to be. The guy I'd been referred to with the website for the "immediate" quote hasn't answered in 4 days.

It would space the newer wheels you are wanting to use out so they fit right. They have such a shallow backspacing that they would be too far inboard to look right without either a wider axle or the spacers.
I'm heading out for Thanksgiving, but I'll take some pictures when I get back and post them. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words!

My 1 ton rear is already wider than the front but it will depend on what these hubs do. I do think the rears need a small spacers and I'll look to change to the larger studs.
Now to FIND them!

I'm going to buy aluminum spacers and change the studs to the larger diameter that belongs on these rims.
I'm using GMT400 dually front spacers on the rear to give me a bit of room between the wheels and the brake backing plate. I'm knocking the locator pegs off of those to start the new year! | | |
