does any one know what kind of axle could be under this truck? I can tell you that it is a perfect circle shaped cover and that from the books i have, NOT a dana axle. can't find the i.d. tag either. the problem is that theses books dont tell what it IS. Also, did th400's come stock in these fine automobiles?

If it has a removable differential carrier and a removable rear inspection cover, I would say you have an Eaton differential. I have a couple and they are indestructable.

The Eaton was pretty much the standard 3/4 ton and 1-ton rear end, and was used for several years. It had several ratio options, and was even available with a Detroit Locker differential in the later models. We ran them in dirt-track race cars in the 70's, behind 500-HP engines without any real problems. They were goshawful heavy in those dirt cars, though! One identifying feature is a backlash adjustmnet on the side of the carrier housing on the driver's side, that bears against the side of the ring gear when it's coasting. Tricky to adjust!

You probably have the TH400 tranny, the way to identify it is by the shape of the pan. Go here:
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/th400.htm

Your differential should be either a 10 or 12 bolt, you count the number of bolts in the cover. From my knowledge of these you should have a 4.10 gear ratio, since you have the automatic. Standard tranny was the SM465, which came with 4.57 gears.
