While troubleshooting an intermittent problem a few weeks ago I opened the glass bowl on the fuel pump and checked for chunks of rust. Since closing it again I have had a bit of gas leakage from around the base of the bowl. It has a 5 year old rubber gasket. At first I just cranked down on the locking screw hoping it would eventually seal, and it did get better, but it is still seeping. My garage smells of gas, and I do not like the smell or the danger. Any tips on getting that gasket to seal good and tight?

The gasket in mine has distorted pretty badly. I clamp the fuel line so no gas gets into the filter then carefully align the gasket and the glass. Over tightening won't help..
Stopping the gas flow means you don;t have to rush to get things seated properly.
Hope this helps.

I've got a metal line from the tank to the pump, but the tank does have the shutoff valve, and that helps stop the gas flow. But the fuel seems to run back from the carb, too, so I lose a bunch of gas in any event. My gasket does not seem to be so beat up. I suspect it has a valley pressed into it which is no longer lined up with the bowl - or in other words - the gasket has lost its elasticity. The original gasket must have been cork, and I wonder if cork might be better. I've got some cork material lying around, maybe I'll try making a new gasket.

Cork will seep as well. Did you try turning the gasket over? You might also look for a seller of nitrile gasket material.

I got my new gasket from a John Deere dealer, but I would guess there are not many of them in Sweden. As noted, I would try to make my own.
