new fuel pump is now delivering fuel to carb. I can get the engine to turnover, start and run for about 3 to 5 seconds with no problem. It runs real rough and sputters. Looks like it is sputtering gas or something out of carb when oil bath filter is off. Points are set correctly and when I pull on throttle I can see gas shooting out of the little needle in the carb. What is the likely cause of my problems?

What engine, what carb? Details!

I'll try to answer your question anyway! These engines (216-261 or 228-302)are very sensitive to manifold or vacuum leaks. Check to see if you have a hose going from the manifold to the windsheild wipers, and if it is in good shape. Also check for any open vacuum ports amd plug em. I bet your engine will run much smoother.

For an engine to run you need air, fuel, compression and proper timing. If you know for sure you have spark and fuel, check timing. I'm assuming it has compression since it's trying to start. It may be low since the cylinders are getting washed from the fuel being pumped through it.
Good luck and keep us posted to what the problem was,
Scott

PS. can you keep it running with carb spray? If so, look at having a fuel delivery problem.

My bad, its a 235 cica 1958. vacuum hose looks to be in good shape. Carb is a Carter YF. I have spark, new plugs new coil, new condensor, new cap and rotor, new points, gapped to .019. All info is much appreciated. will try the carb cleaner. If the float is stuck, what then? Thanks guys!
