Carter's says gmc redorange which doesn't sound right. I have seen gm crimson red as a notation. Should I prime the parts? Insides of the sheet metal stay metal or do they get paint? Bell housing the same as the block? Should the mating surfaces be painted and then assembled? Contrasting bolt colors or build it up and shoot the whole thing gasket sides and all?
I expect the starter/generator/fan brackets to be black. Which black? Thanks for the advice.

It was a deeper red like Crysler or Buick. I use primer on bare metal surfaces & Rustoleom rusty -metal- primer on rusted surfaces. Don,t paint the inside. If it comes loose it can clog oil passages. I believe the bell housing was not painted from the factory. Duplicolor has a paint called builders cast coat. It looks like cast iron. I lke to assemble the engine & paint it all. On the pulleys & brackets etc. use Ace hardware premium in a black can. Semi-flat black.Krylon also has a semi-flat black but it is duller. I use it under fenders & core supports & inner fenders. Now after you spend about 50 bucks on aerosols you will have a whole cabinate full like I do. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

Anyone try this with success, this seems like valve cove paint of the 60's. I feel the crimson red is correct but the Filling Station lists the dark grey as authentic for this engine. Any help? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | I think gray was the color of Chevy 216, 235, 261s. GMC should be red as mentioned above. I paint all the parts before they go together with the exception of internal mating services. All the bolts I use get a clear coat on them and most everything still looks good like that. Once finished I touch up stuff by hand with a small detail brush.

What is the part number for the Filling Station GMC 228 engine paint? I find their search feature difficult to use and only see Chevy engine paints.

The shade of that crimson red varied from plant to plant and day to day. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 37 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 37 | What is the pre-1951 GMC 228 engine color? I'm going to be painting an engine for a 1946 1/2 ton.
