Went on a long cruise and started hearing noise from somewhere out back. Sounds like it's about the same revs as the wheels. Under power I don't hear it but coasting I do. Don't see any grease leaking (from being hot) from wheel bearings. Going to get car up to redo brake system next week. Yeah, it failed again also. So what do I do to find noise? Thanks.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Pull the cover off & see what you have. There should be no side play in the carrier or the pinion brgs.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Axle bearing going bad??....maybe little pieces of the spider gears inside? ... are you sure its not a front wheel bearing and the noise is traveling and sounding like the rear end?
With it sitting still see how much "play" you have back and forth in the driveshaft.

noise under coast condition is usually pinion bearings, although tooth pattern could also be a culprit.

My friends axle in his '52 was chattering badly as he 'forgot',it quietened down considerably after he added the correct gear oil additive.
Just a thought.....
