HI,
I just bought a 2 ton 1946 Chevy and I'm looking for information, links anything that can tell me the details of what I have, when I bought it I had thought it was a smaller model (do to the snow surrounding it) and when the seller pulled it out it just kept coming, he told me he thought it was a 1.5 ton and I ran the numbers and it said 2 ton. Anyways under the snow I thought it was a smaller 3/4 to 1 ton. If anyone has pictures of a complete inside of this model so I can compare and piece together some of the parts I am missing. Also I am stumped about the third lever in the cab (not 4 wheel drive I checked) you can see them in the pictures. It’s next to the shifter very close. I was also wondering about engines, the one in it the guy said was a 216 but I didn't see anything in my research saying that they had 216s a lot with 235s I would like to put a 235 in it regardless (its more cost effective at the moment than rebuilding the 216).

Any help would be appreciated,

Josh-akguy34

The older pick ups and cars had 216's. The larger trucks were 235's, later models were all 235's. They all bolt in the same. Go to tech. tips at the top of the page and then clic on identifing my truck then vin buster. You can type in your vin number and it will tell you excatly what you have and when and where it was built. On your cab, all the body parts are the same as a pickup except the front fenders.

I was also wondering about the extra shift lever. You'll probably just have to crawl under there and see where it goes. It sould be a shifter for a two speed axle, or it might be for a PTO or hoist.

Josh, The extra lever is for a two speed rear axle. I purchased a 46 2-ton about 6 months ago and although I was able to drive it on the trailer I have still haven't driven it down the road. These trucks take some time to get parts for and nothing comes apart easy! Good luck with your project!

Josh,

What a cool old truck - a real piece of history! I love the door art especially.

I've got a '41 Fire truck, same basically as yours. Mine showed up with a 216 engine, which I learned was a replacement for the original. It seems these Chevy 6s commonly froze and got cracked blocks. So until you run the numbers on your engine block, you won't know what you have for sure.

The truck vin was on a plate on the passenger side, on the cowl, under the hood, close to the door hinges. A little rectangular plate. If all you find are 4 little holes, the plate's gone missing.

Get catalogs from Jim Carter Chevy and Chevs of the 40s. MOST of what you will need can be found in these and other catologs, and they've got a lot of info. on what's supposed to be there. Just about anything can be found - if you run into a tight spot, just post here - someone will have the answer, for sure.

Send me a Personal Message with any detailed questions if you want - glad to discuss this vintage, it's my favorite.

-Michael

Thank you all for your help, I did find the vin and thats when I found out it was a 2 ton instead of the 1.5 the guy thought it was. Thanks for the information on the 2nd shift lever it is so caked in mud right know on the undercarrage I don't think I could tell were it goes to (I'm waiting for warmer weather to crawl under there and clean it) The door art says MITCHELL TRUCK & TRACTOR SERVICE Fairbanks-Valdez Phone East 337-A

Josh,

I'm in the middle of a 46 2 ton restoration. I have 100+ pictures of the truck's disassembly. Shoot me an email or give me a call and I can fill you on more and help with directions on where I have found parts as well as what I have done where I can't find parts.
