The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop gas tank coating

Recently removed the gas tank from my Chev 1/2 ton, had to strip the internal coating which showed signs of some flaking. Externally the tank looks new with a thin coating of either galvanize paint, not sure. Anyone know what is the best to cover the exterior. Should it have a primer? I have it sanded down to a nice shiny surface.

Eastwood has a cadmium paint for gas tanks. Tank Zone I think it is called. I believe you can go over bare metal.

Blanch53, what did you use to strip the internal coating in your tank?

And, the outside of mine looks good except for a few spots where the straps were. Do I need to take the whole tank down to bare metal before putting a coat on?

And, I bought some "hammered" metallic spray paint to use on the interior. Do I need to use special tank paint for the gas tank? If so, is this to allow for breathing as the tank "sweats"? I ask because I noticed that the cab wall behind the tank has surface rust, where as the rest of the interior is clean. I'm wondering if I should use the tank stuff back there as well.
