hello, i have a 66 fleetside shortbox and want to have a shop install power steering for me. would anyone know what a fair cost estimate would be?

thanks for the quick reply Fred. i bought my 66 a little over 3 months ago, and have it fixed up pretty good so far to be a daily driver. the steering upgrade is next.

do it yourself, it will save you a decent amount of money and it will not be that difficult on a truck. i just recently put power steering in a 69 roadrunner, i had to get the steering box from a salvage yard and got it redone by redhead steering which is one of the best steering companies in the u.s. http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ i got the pump/pulleys/and brackets through a catalog. and overall i saved a couple hundred bucks from doing it myself and a shop will charge you alot more for parts and the labor fees.

You did not mention if you have a 6 or 8 cylinder. Conversions on the V8 are fairly easy; the pump brackets are available from a number of sources. CPP has a complete kit that makes it simple.

Getting the pump brackets for my ’66 292 took some time to find.

There is a person on e-bay selling brackets for the 292 I6. Price is resonable too! Search power steering 292 chevy, and you will find it.

If you can weld, it's very doable...I did my 64 years ago along with a sway bar, make a new truck out of it.

4-5-6 did you move your shop over on Southwest Blvd

the one on ebay has it's problems it seems as it utilizes one belt for pump and alt. there doesn't appear to have that much belt contact on the pulleys, which will cause slippage
that is how it appears on the photo of the 230-250 i6 setup

Concerning the brackets on Ebay,
I have seen several factory and hotrod applications where the belt wrap on the alternator was less than 90 degrees and they worked fine.
As the add states, the brackets have plenty of front to back adjustment to account for different belting arrangements.
In other words, it works with multiple belts as well. The pictures currently show this. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me.

Did you have to fab any brackets?

I live on the Blvd. and keep a few of my 4-5-6 Chevy trucks over there, but my shop is one block north of 11th & Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, KS.
