Thought I would go ahead and do a tune up on the 1952 3100 I purchased a few weeks ago just so I would know when the parts were all replaced. After reviewing the specs for the engine ( a 1961 235), I ordered AC Delco R45 plugs however when I pulled the old ones, noticed they are R45S with a gap of 0.030". Also the end of the plug on the 45S is longer than on the 45's.

Should I go ahead and use the R45's gapped at the spec of 0.035" or get a set of R45S plugs and gap them the same as what is currently in the truck?

As always, many thanks for your help.

I think the R45 is a direct replacement for the stock R44 that came with the engine.

i just installed a set of E3 spark plugs and i believe it made a difference. i am using E3.52. i go them from Oreilly's at $6.00 a piece. i seem to be able to shift into a higher gear at a lower speed without lugging. i have a 54/235 with dual cars and exhaust.

Use the R45S. It is an extended tip plug & an improved version of the 44 or45 that came with it originally. These ext. tip plugs cannot be used in a flathead engine.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Our 54 came with R45's in it and the box of parts that was with it had R 43's in it so they got put in after I read they were meant more for highway driving as opposed to in town driving (different heat range) Not sure if that made any difference. I had trouble starting the truck this year so it now has rj8c champions in it as that was the only plug reference at out local parts supply.I think most of the problem was my points though. One of the guys at our auto parts place in an old chevy car guy and he knows his stuff which makes quite a difference.

First time I saw this truck I said "That's the one!"

Many thanks to you all for your advice and suggestions.

I think I will just go ahead and instaall the R45's gapped at 0.035" and see if there is any difference in how the engine runs. Will also replace the points, condensor, cap and rotor so will hopefully end up with a smoother running engine.
