Hi all, here is my problem. I have a 54 150 sedan. My dad helped me get this thing running after sitting in the weeds for 40 years. The car ran like a new car! The carb does have issues though. It leaks really really bad down the back side closest to the firewall. It stopped for a while then started back up again. Is this common? Dad says it could be the float sticking. If it isn't, is there another 1 bbl carb that you all would suggest I put on that doesn't require a ton of mods to work? Dad doesn't want to rebuild because he says it may be warn out so bad.
I may be young but I'm willing to try and learn, which is better than being old and thinking you know it all... I'm looking in your direction dad.
I'd rebuild the carb, it' cheap and easy ,if it's a stock carb it's a rochester model B. Rebuilding kits are at the FLAPS for about 20.00 bucks or start looking for a carter model YF 2101s thats auto choke for that year engine.
Take the # off the carb and order the right rebuilding kit,Carb King on this site sells kits also and may be able to help locate a replacement carb ,I run carters on my truck and I feel they are a better carb, but there are alot of rochesters out there that run good ,but for now I'd rebuild the carb you have, you might be happy with it .
It is a Rochester. Where would the leak be coming from? I can't see where an overflow is on that side. The leak is bothering my dad because it runs down on the exhaust manifold. He doesn't want to have his head hanging over the carb and manifolds in case.

After many repeated heating and cooling cycles there is often a warpage between the cover and the bowl. If this is where it is leaking a new gasket might cure the problem for a while. People have tried various methods of correcting the warped area with modest success.
sounding like a broken record here. rebuild it, it is doing you no good the way it is and the next step could be call the fire department.

If the fuel level is high enough to leak past that gasket, the float is adjusted way too high, or it's flooding. Put a good inline filter in the gas line to keep dirt from making the needle valve stick open, and clean out the crud that's already lodged under the needle valve. You still might have to rebuild ther carb, but fix the flooding condition first. Jerry

http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ Don't mean to insult you so if you already did this never mind: You did drop the gas tank and clean it out, flush out the fuel line and install a good filter right? Crud can cause the float to stick, the bowl to over-fill.
What are (or is) "FLAPS" and were do I find "Carb King" ?
I have carb problems too!
Thanks

Well, we couldn't get the car to repeat the overflow again and we let it run for a long time. 1/2 hour, reving the engine, idling, etc... I do not have the gas coming from the tank, just being sucked out of a 2 gal gas can. we added seafoam to the 2 gals of gas and ran that through the carb. Seems to be running pretty good now. Dad's going to help me put the carb kit in anyways.
