Maybe taping up the paint real good will help prevent damage.

A little tape around the places prong to get skinned a little will help along with being careful. You can do it. I did it by myself so it was even harder. Imagine holding the window from falling down the door with one hand, and wrestling the vent window in with the other. I managed only one scratch.
