It doesn't like much above 40 mph, and I hate to keep that old splash-lube 216 winding that high. My buddy has a 52 with the 3-on-the-tree tranny and no rear helper springs. It runs out nice at 55MPH , much more highway friendly.
My question is if the difference is simply in the tranny or did they use different rear end gearing in those years??
Help | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | It sounds like you haven't found 4th gear yet. The gear ratios should be the same, and 4th gear is the same as 3rd gear in the 3 speed. It is 1:1 on both transmissions.
How many lugs do your rear wheels have? Perhaps a previous owner swapped a 3/4 or 1 ton rear in for more grunt. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 | As stated the tranny's were all 1:1 and the rears were all 4:11 from the factory on 1/2 tons. There is an aftermarket ring and pinion set to change the ratio to 3:55 which may have been installed in buddy's truck and of course would not be visible.
