OK, if i wanted to swap my 235 out of my '55 first series with a 283, what all am i gonna have to change, and how big of a problem is this?

Do a little searching here and you'll find lots of the details.

You'll need a V-8 type bellhousing from a little later truck and you'll need to deal with steering box/exhaust manifold interference. The problems have all been overcome more than one.

Oh, and of course you'll have some objections from the 'keep it stock' crowd.

SCboy, VVVRRROOOOOOOOM, man I like the V8's....but if you are in need of a GOOD 1955, 235 engine I have one and it is still hooked to the tranny. Let the stock boys whine though. Its YOUR truck. If you go V8 be sure to run straight Pipes. grin
