Sometimes you just have to lift up hard on the hood. You should be able to see if the plunger/bolt is hanging up on the edge of the latch/plate. The mechanism is a very simple release, you push the lever to the side and the cone shaped plunger is released. The slide latch goes around the plunger groove. This means if all else fails you can pull the grill and go up from the bottom with a bar or screwdriver to get it released.
