Any ideas on how to get my hood open on my 53 GMC truck? The long lever will not release the hood and the other lever does nothing when I pull it.

Pull on the long lever as hard as you can. While doing this, bang on the hood about at the hood ornament with your fist or a rubber mallet.

Have a "helper" push down on the hood while pulling the lever. Sometimes you just have to lift up hard on the hood. You should be able to see if the plunger/bolt is hanging up on the edge of the latch/plate. Push, pull wiggle and giggle it will come open!

Push down hard and at the same time pull the lever as hard as you can, wiggle it if necessary. The mechanism is a very simple release, you push the lever to the side and the cone shaped plunger is released. The slide latch goes around the plunger groove. Make sure you make the correct adjustments and grease the mechanism well before closing the hood again.

I don't know on a 53 GMC but on a 51 the grill mounts to the frame, not to the surrounding sheet metal like a Chevy. This means if all else fails you can pull the grill and go up from the bottom with a bar or screwdriver to get it released.

The one on my '54 binds up sometimes. As George said, push down on the hood and pull hard.

Got it and thanks for the ideas. Did take another person. Never had this much trouble in the past. Thanks again.
