New to the forums and looking at buying a truck. Right now all I have is a couple of pictures to go by. Wanted to get your opinions before I drive a couple hours to look at it. Here is what the add says. 1952 3/4 TON CHEVY WITH A FACTORY FLATBED IT HAS BEEN SITTING A WHILE ALL THE TIRES ARE STILL UP - 216 ENGINE -3 SPEED TRANS. TRUCK IS STILL A VERY SOLID FOR ITS AGE - BED HAS GOOD WOOD WITH A LITTLE WORK THIS TRUCK COULD BE ON THE ROAD. Seller has a title and says one window is broke. I'm unsure about the factory flatbed. Is the way the frame is under the bed correct? Also the rear end is not original to the truck though thats not a big deal for me. Any input would be appreciated as I have very limited knowledge with these old trucks. Posted this on another forum and didn't get much input. Hoping to do better here. Thanks | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,859 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,859 | That one might not be a 3/4 ton- - - -the dual rear wheels most likely make it a 1-ton, or possibly a Frankenstein cobbled up out of mismatched parts. The bed is a pretty scarce option, looks like a factory flatbed. I'd also be surprised if it's got a 3 speed transmission. Anything of 3/4 ton or larger will have a SM-420 4-speed. Depending on the price, it looks like you've got a very restorable rig there, or maybe a daily driver in "as is" condition with just a little tinkering. Jerry

Is there any way to tell what it was rated as originally if the GVW tag isn't there? Being that its an original flatbed maybe the 3 spd was swapped in at some point? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,859 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,859 | The 3-speed would have a column shift system, unless it's a considerably older transmission than the truck. I don't think I've ever seen a 3/4 ton truck with a factory-installed 3 speed. If it has a 3-speed with a floor shift, you've really got an oddball rig. Jerry

Is there any way to tell what it was rated as originally if the GVW tag isn't there? Look on the drivers side front door pillar. You will find a tag that has the id number and the weight. Copy the tag number here Either way, it looks like a nice truck as long as the rear end and other mechanical items were not cobbled in and everything works. does it have the stock radio too? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 583 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 583 | Does this truck have an open or closed drive shaft? The rearend may have been changed to the dually to have an open driveshaft. The 3-speed tranny would be a sychronized trans, the 4-speed probably wasn't. May have been changed to get away from having to double clutch when shifting.

Kinda has a big effect. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | That looks like a nice truck to work on. The 1/2 ton in those years ha d a completely enclosed drive shaft but the 3/4 had an enclosed extension to the transmission and then a two piece open setup. The 1 Ton had a completely open driveline.

If the front is original, I'll bet it was a single wheel rear in the beginning, Scott | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 5 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 5 | The price is $2000. I emailed the guy once and got a reply. I emailed again and asked for more pictures and info and have not gotten a reply yet. Its well over an hour away. I'd like to see more pictures and get a vin before I drive all the way to look at it. Hopefully the guy comes through. I believe the rear to be from a 70's era dually.
(there) is another one that popped up today. I may have to take a road trip and take a look at both of them.

I drive an hour to work every day! haha. that being said pix look good. Love the dual rear wheel setup. check the cab corners fwd floor lower doors fwd cowls take a peek at the frame make sure it has not been killed and stitched back together. depending on what your desired out come is will justify its current issues and condition.
